This racing car carries a powerful engine, namely the 500 kW Peugeot Hybrida engine, which consists of a conventional engine and an electric motor. The Peugeot Le Mans 2022 Hypercar carries a newly developed 2.6 liter V6 twin-turbo engine mounted in the center of the car, right behind the driver.

Initially the car’s engine was designed with a single turbo arrangement, but Peugeot Sport ended up doubling the induction to hit its target center of gravity. Using this engine, the 2022 Peugeot Le Mans is capable of generating power up to 670.5 horsepower and channeled to the rear wheels, and this V6 engine weighs only 165 kg.

As for the electric motor, it is installed in the front and functions as a motor generator unit capable of producing 268 horsepower and channeling it to the front wheels and activating the four-wheel drive system. The all-type 2022 Peugeot Le Mans engine is driven via a seven-speed gearbox with a steering-mounted paddle shift.

At speeds above 120 km / h, the twin-turbo engine is electronically limited to a maximum power of 402 horsepower and tuned according to the power delivered by the electric motor, which varies based on the battery level. As a result, the combined output must not exceed 500 kW. After the New Peugeot Le Mans 2022 ran out of battery power, it returned to rear-wheel drive mode and the combustion engine returned to an output of 500 kW.

Before the race starts, the battery will be fully charged thanks to the vehicle’s plug-in hybrid system. During the race, the only way to charge it will be through the kinetic regenerative energy recovery system. The LMH regulations also have a few exceptions as the maximum output of an internal combustion engine can be increased by up to three percent to 690 horsepower at the end of the straight line provided the battery is depleted.

In addition, the Le Mans 2022 can work in hybrid mode at speeds below 120 km / h, but only in the pit lane or whenever there is the same 60 km / h limit. Several Peugeot Sport LMH competitors are currently in the development phase and the powertrain will undergo trials in the first half of next year and engineers will also evaluate it with simulators. It is planned that track testing will begin towards the end of 2021 before its official racing debut in 2022.

Not only is Peugeot the only one committed to LMH as Toyota is also working on a race car with the New GR Super Sport. The Regulations state that each company must also build at least 25 road vehicles with a hybrid powertrain within two years of the race car’s debut. The French automaker told Car Throttle that it has no plans to build the 2022 Peugeot Le Mans hypercar in a road version just to meet homologation requirements.

Peugeot has told the public that they are building a prototype hypercar that is used for 100 percent of the races only. So, it is certain that Peugeot will not produce the 2022 Le Mans road model to meet the homologation requirements of the racing series. In the homologation of the WEC FIA 2022 race, one of the conditions is that each racing participant is required to make at least 25 units of similar cars in the road version.

This means that Peugeot, returning to the Le Mans Hypercar category, will have to create a street version of its Le Mans hypercar. The regulation says that all 25 cars produced must use a hybrid powertrain within two years of the hypercar racing debut. However, the regulation also states that companies are not required to produce legal cars on the same roads as their racing cars.

Instead, only hybrid setups should have a highway variant. Well, it just so happens that Peugeot already has the latest hybrid vehicle, the Peugeot 508 PSE.
